Gutter Cleaning Basics -

Simple Tools and Methods to Work Safely
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Frank_Kalinski]Frank Kalinski

Sometimes we put jobs off because they seem difficult and dangerous. Gutter cleaning and maintenance is probably at the top of the procrastination list but gutters should be cleaned twice a year if possible. The spring cleaning, after the seeds and helicopters come down, is the most important. Many seeds float and quickly make their way to the downspout where it will become clogged in no time. In the fall the weather can change fast and the cold and wet is miserable and dangerous for ladder climbing. I have been in the gutter repair and maintenance business for more than five years and I can tell you late spring cleaning is critical to yearly gutter maintenance. We’ll look at few simple tools and methods that will make the job a little less scary and a little easier to do.

The biggest tool of course is the ladder. I have found an extension ladder is the best type for gutter cleaning because you can get above the gutter and look down into it. Don’t worry about scratching the gutter. The coatings they use on gutters are very tough and very few people are going to openly criticize you about a couple of mars on your gutters. Safety is your main concern and you don’t want to reach blindly back and over the edge of the gutter. Going up on roof should be avoided too: the pitch of the roof is very difficult to work on and worse if you are leaning over the edge. The shingles are easy to break off and your boots will gouge away the tiny stones decreasing the life of the roof. You will also need flat wedge large enough to rest one foot of the ladder so it will be level; a heavy pair of rubber work gloves and a belt hook to carry a small garden hoe. The local hardware will carry many of these items but go to the Yellow Pages and find a ladder and scaffolding supply store. You’ll be pleased to find many products the big box stores can’t carry. And remember to wear over-the-ankle lace-up boots.

An extension ladder that extends to 14 feet is good for a single story and at least 24 feet for a two story home. The ladders will have instructions on the side which must be followed closely. The small garden hoe should not be more than three inches across and the handle not more than two feet long. This will be easy to carry in a belt hook or other tool belt. The heavy rubber gloves are needed to avoid being cut by numerous sharp screws and edges inside the gutter. The gloves will also keep your hands clean and dry (a real blessing in the cold!).

Start at the end of the gutter opposite the downspout. Work your way along reaching out with the hoe but always keep your shoulders within the vertical rails of the ladder. You should be able to reach three to four feet of gutter from each side at a time safely. Be very careful when cleaning over the downspout. Don’t drag the hoe across the opening, instead use your fingers to gently reach under the leaves and seeds and push them over and remove. I don’t bother with a hose. Hoses are dangerous and difficult to handle on a ladder and only make things slippery. The hose will also wash too much solid material into the upper elbows at one time clogging them. Just leave the small bits that don’t come out by hand for the rain to gently wash away. Remember your gutters are not a surgical operating room. I would never use a leaf blower because these will just force leaves and seeds into the downspout and being on the roof waving a heavy piece of equipment around just sounds like a disaster!

The best thing about using an extension ladder is being able to look down into the downspout. Thump on it a few times and you’ll know if it is plugged. Of all the gutters and downspouts I’ve seen these upper elbows are the worst places for plugs. If the elbows are riveted together (a rivet looks like a small flat disc with a small hole in the center) you’ll have to drill it out with a 1/8 drill bit using a cordless drill/driver. The downspouts may also be screwed together with self drilling screws that have ¼ inch hex heads. The elbows may have several rivets or screws and are sometimes hard to pull apart. In come cases you will have to take the entire downspout down by removing the straps. The elbows and straps can be re-assembled with the self-drilling screws (color matched screws are available at gutter and siding supply houses).

So now you are ready to keep your Gutters clean and flowing freely. If you have not spent a lot of time on ladders, start out by leaning the ladder against your house or garage and practicing a little; get the feel of being on a ladder; ladders are flexible and will bounce a little. Start with the easy to reach gutters around the garage and 1st story; then work your way up to the higher levels. Use the flat wedge to shim up the ladder if it is not perpendicular to the ground. Again, follow the directions that come with the ladder.

Gutter Cleaning with Pressure Washers

Cleaning Gutters is often thought of as a rough and time consuming venture. Many people dread gutter cleaning and it has become the brunt of many household chore jokes. However, it is a chore that must be done.

This cleaning is essential because if individuals do not keep their gutters clean and clear they are likely to become clogged and not provide proper drainage as they are intended to do. Sometimes this is due to the accumulation of leaves, dirt, roof debris and other trash, while in other cases it may be due to a break or malfunction in the gutter itself.

The intention of gutters is to help maneuver the rain water and melting snow, along with other similar weather conditions, off the roof in order to keep the roof from getting damaged. The roof of a house protects the house, but when gutter cleaning is neglected, the water and other debris has no where to go and is often forced to stay on the roof and lead to problems that affect the structure of the roof itself.

Without proper and regular gutter cleaning the individual and the house involved could soon notice a severe problem with their roof such as leakage or broken shingles.

However, the application of pressure washers helps to turn this chore into a much more effective and efficient task. Gutter cleaning now takes a fraction of the time that it used to and many people are very happy with the results. Pressure washers use the water pressure in order to literally break up the material that is stuck in the gutters.

This debris then gets washed away down the gutters and off of the roof. People with pressure washers are generally much more willing to attack the job of gutter cleaning because they know that with their pressure washers they will be able to accomplish the task in a timely manner and then they can spend the rest of their time doing something that they enjoy, rather than something that needs to be done. http://www.ultimatewasher.com

Gutter Guards – The Benefits and Drawbacks of a Gutter Guard System
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Michael_Marchese]Michael Marchese

Homeowners use gutter guards to prevent debris such as leaves and other particles from clogging the gutter. There are different types of products that people can choose from when purchasing from online stores. A homeowner can purchase them on online stores that sell home appliances or online superstores that retail home and other appliances.

These products should be in good condition, especially during the rainy season, to prevent rainwater from flowing down the walls of a home. One can hire specialized cleaners to do it for them if they do not know how to do it. Most companies that sell home appliances also offer cleaning services for a fee.

Copper Gutter Guards

These are the best for long term use because they do not rust and nor do they rot. Aluminum gutter guards, which are cheaper than most others, are strong. However, they rust when kept in poor conditions. During the winter season, most people experience problems with their gutters, as ice blocks the opening at the top. If a person does not get rid of them the moment they start to build up, then the water may flow over it or against the walls of a home. The freezing temperatures may cause the formation of massive ice dams, thus causing the entire system to over flood. Homeowners can avoid this by having companies install heater cables. This is a costly procedure. However, it is worth the effort and it saves a person the trouble of having to keep unclogging their gutters.

Besides the installation of heater cables, many people purchase gutter guards to prevent ice from forming at the top and falling into the system and blocking it. A homeowner needs to maintain copper gutter guards by purchasing and applying sealants on them regularly to prevent them from turning green. The green color is also called a patina. Some people like it and allow the metal to gradually turn green. Others prefer to maintain the original color and apply the sealant regularly.

Aluminum Gutter Guards

These products also have special sealants that a person may use to prevent them from rusting quite fast. Unlike the green patina, rust will materially impair the effectiveness of the aluminum. Protection and maintenance is important because it enables one to avoid incurring extra costs, which include repair costs or replacements costs. When selecting a suitable solution, one should mull over a number of things such as the circumference of the gutter, the design as well as their functional advantages.

Aluminum, by nature, can be have a natural useful life of about 10 – 15 years. This useful life will vary dramatically depending on several factors including the external environment, the galvanization used and the maintenance employed by the owner. For example, using aluminum products in a house next to the ocean that are not galvanized with some sort of corrosion-resistance coating and poorly maintained is going to have a much shortly lifespan than a zinc galvanized product located in a dry (desert) community with an owner who performs annual maintenance.

From a design perspective, not every product is suitable for every home. Homeowners should try to match gutter guards with the existing system and the type of home. For instance, homes made out of stucco match well with copper, while grey houses blend well with aluminum.

Plastic Gutter Guards

Plastic is another material used in the fabrication process. They come in various colors. Therefore, one can select one that matches their roof. Homeowners can also blend the roof with a gutter guard of a different color though the two should compliment each other. The shape of the product may make a home visually attractive or not attractive at all. This requires a person to compare their shape and that of the product in order to select a suitable piece.

In summary, there are three major types of materials that you can use for your solution, copper, aluminum and plastic. Each one has its own strengths and weaknesses.

So Simple.
Wasp Spray.
But, if they are out of reach. Get or use a normal(lawn) sprayer.
Put either bug spray(expensive) or Bleach (cheap) in the bug spray and spray the hell out of the nest.
The bug sprayer will allow you to spray further than normal bug/wasp sprays.
This will work..

Good Luck

How Gutter Guards and Leaf Guards Work
By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=Richard_Kuhns]Richard Kuhns

Gutter Guards and Leaf Guards (except for screen devices) work by the principle of surface adhesion.

You’ll notice that all gutter covers or gutter protectors have in common a solid top through which nothing passes. And this top usually sits some distance above the gutter itself.

Somehow the water that flows from the roof onto the top of the gutter guard or gutter cover must get into the gutter. Reason says that the water would come to the front of the gutter cover and just fly off into space. And if the gutter cover were simply flat from front to back, that would be the result.

To keep this from happening, the manufacturers of gutter covers designed a curved (arcurate) surface at the front most part of the gutter cover.

If you’ve ever poured water from a pitcher and had it trickle down the side of the pitcher instead of pouring into a cup or some vessel, you’ll know what I’m talking about. The surface tension of water causes it to stick to the curved surface.

Thus as the water flows from the back to the front of the flat surface of the gutter cover, it adheres to the downward curved portion of the gutter cover and into the gutter.

Obviously there needs to be a space between the edge of the curved surface and the front edge of the gutter otherwise there wouldn’t be room for the water to enter. This space is usually a quarter to three-eight’s of an inch in width.

In the following explanation of how these systems work please forgive me for using the abreviations for the product names as opposed to their registered trademarks as I do not have permission to use the trade marks. G as in GH and GT stands for “gutter” and H stands for “helmet.” Below L stands for “leaf” and G as in LG stands for “guard”. T as in GT stands for “top” and “per” as one word. And with LP. L stands for Leaf and P for Proof.

The less sophisticated Gutter Covers, like GH, only have one long curved surface (fin or louver) to guide the water into the gutter. The disadvantage is that not only water sticks to the curved surface, but so do leaves and spring time debris which results in clogging of the gutters inside.

Another thing to consider is the radius or size of the curvature. The larger the radius, the larger the flow of water that the gutter protector will accomodate. Likewise, the smaller the curvature or radius, the lesser the flow of water that the product will handle. Thus some of these gutter covers or leaf guards like LP don’t work in heavy rain falls.

Some gutter covers and gutter guards work with a combination of designs. In addition to the curved fin, they have a trough as in the GT product. The downward curved fin delivers the water to a trough with sieve-like openings. The goal here is to keep the debris that follows the curve from entering the gutter in full size form. Unfortunately, in mid to heavy debris conditions, the debris fills the trough or breaks down and still enters the gutter in sufficient quantity as to clog the gutters.

The most advanced design of gutter cover or gutter protector combines the downward curved surface with two rows of louvers. Each louver is three-fourths of an inch in length. This gutter guard is known as the Waterloov Gutter Protection System. Water flows downward from the large open curved surface, which handles both light and heavy rainfalls, and into the first row of louvers. The rain water that is not collected by the first row of louvers flows down from the bridge between the first row of louvers into the second row of louvers.

With the Waterloov Gutter Protection system, nothing larger than three-fourths of an inch can pass into the gutter. Any debris that small which enters the gutter is small enough to be flushed down the leader so that gutters remain free flowing and never clog.

With this distinct advantage of the Waterloov Gutter Protector design, one would wonder why anyone would ever select any other gutter guard.

If you’re wondering how to choose the best gutter guard system for your home you’re not alone! Thousands of consumers scour the Internet in search of “the best gutter guard”. If you find yourself doing the same thing this article may help you choose a gutter guard system for your home that can save you hundreds of dollars.

Gutter guards come in a variety of styles, sizes and materials that are designed to be more durable than those old plastic mesh screens found in popular hardware stores. The old style aluminum and plastic mesh screens that come in rolls used to be the most popular gutter guard system found on homes but were quickly removed after a short time. The problem with these light-weight mesh or screen like gutter guards is they can’t hold up to the weight of snow and ice. Many home owners found that these mesh gutter guards were overwhelmed by snow and ice and were forced down to the bottom of the Gutters. Once these mesh screens collapsed they would then obstruct small debris that would normally be flushed from the gutters when it rained. Another popular idea that doesn’t work involves the cone-shaped wire mesh plugs that are inserted into down spout outlets to stop debris from clogging downspouts. These down spout mesh guards are extremely effective for blocking anything from entering the downspouts, even water after a small handful of leaves wrap around them!

Extensive testing of different gutter guard systems over the last 16 years has shown that brands using water adhesion tend to give the best protection when comparing gutter guard systems. We have also taken polls of different gutter guard systems and their prices in the Maryland area, and found pricing ranging from $6 a linear foot to as much as $19 a linear foot! Many of these Gutter Guards are also made of aluminum which can create problems in itself. One problem is that paint doesn’t last forever. After being subjected to the sun’s damaging UV rays and weathering, the paint starts to oxidize and wear off the surface leaving a blotchy and worn appearance. Another concern is hail, sticks and other natural occurrences that can dent the material and possibly damage its water adhesion ability (which allows the water to pour over next to your home’s foundation – causing basement flooding). What’s even more alarming is that the high end gutter guards are all made of aluminum and they may be subject to these problems more than their lower priced PVC and Vinyl composition competitors! Before you decide that you have finally found the best gutter guard system, do your research carefully and contact a reliable gutter cleaning contractor near you!
